The texts chosen for this website during 2017 have been taken from the Book of Common Prayer (1979) Daily Office Lectionary and the Book of Common Prayer (1979) Sunday Lectionary. Sunday readings have been taken from the Sunday Lectionary and the daily readings from the Daily Office Lectionary.
The Book of Common Prayer in its original form was published in 1549 in England. There have been a handful of revisions throughout the centuries, but much of the structure has remained the same.
The value of this book for us today—and this site specifically—is twofold. One, it provides an organized list of Biblical texts that roughly follow throughout the life of Jesus Christ. Reading through this list provides us with an opportunity to gain more of a breadth of the life of Christ. The second reason it is important is that because this book has been, in some form or another, in publication for some 450 years, we have an opportunity to read through a schedule of texts that have withstood the test of time. These texts and this specific order have blessed the lives of Christians for centuries.
