Most people have at some point trusted someone only to be disappointed. That makes it hard to trust again. And so we come to only trust our self, to rely only on our self. After all, who better looks after our own interests than our self?
Proverbs 3:5 tells us “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” When we put our trust in our own understanding we soon either find ourselves becoming anxious and second guessing our decisions or we begin to take pride in our own intellect, our own accomplishments, even our own spirituality.
Verse 7 then tells us to “Be not wise in your own eyes.” Rather than putting our trust in ourselves, we need to trust God with all our heart. We need to involve Him in all of our decisions and when we do so He says He will bless us.
In this chapter He tells us to honor Him with our wealth, to give Him our first fruits and to provide for others. When we give of what we have we are putting our trust in God to provide for us rather than trusting that we can provide for ourselves. And when we do trust in Him, He makes our paths straight, He fills our barns, He gives us wisdom, we won’t be afraid and we will find favor with God.
