Proverbs 5
Author: James German
If you watch any sort of television these days, it would seem evident that our world glamorizes the concept of adultery and sleeping around. Staying true to your spouse is “old fashioned” according to the ever growing views of many.
The writer of Proverbs offers great wisdom to all men, young and old: DON’T DO IT!! He paints a very accurate and truthful picture of what adultery can do to a man. It will most certainly bring him to ruin. He even warns that it can cause “strangers to feast on his wealth and your toil to enrich the house of another.” Possibly a biblical reference to the woes of alimony?
As I read this chapter I can’t help but think of Joseph’s response to the enticement of Potiphar’s wife in Genesis 39.12: “She caught him by his cloak and said, ‘Come to bed with me!’ But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.”
He RAN! His immediate response was to RUN!!
My take from this chapter: We need to RUN as fast as we can from any hint of immorality and opportunities of adultery. Let me be clear – I believe this includes viewing pornography. As Solomon states, it will lead to ruin. And the icing on the cake comes from verse 21: “For your ways are in full view of the Lord…”
May the Lord bless our current and future marriages. May He keep us safe from Satan’s clutches.
